Talk 01
When Fitting In Becomes a Survival Skill
The psychology of belonging, identity, and the childhood coping strategies that quietly run adult lives.
Speaking
Memoir, history, and three decades of lived experience, built for colleges, libraries, museums, veteran organizations, and leadership teams.
About the Speaker
Michael Gordon Bennett spent three decades across radio, television, and independent production — as a senior assignment editor, producer, and writer in Los Angeles radio and television news, a producer at the Travel Channel, and a strategic operator across independent film and finance — before turning to the story that had been forming since 1970. His book Out of Frame: Growing Up Where I Didn't Belong is a first-person account of reverse busing, military family life, and the racial calibration of the 1970s Deep South, framed through the social science of adaptation, code-switching, and the false self.
He is a U.S. Air Force veteran with a BA in Journalism from California State University, Northridge, and a Certificate in Feature Film Writing from UCLA. He is an award-recognized screenwriter — Austin Film Festival, Los Angeles International Screenplay Awards, and Big Apple Film Festival for Barrage — and the founder of 727 Squared Entertainment, the production company adapting Out of Frame for the screen, and of the T.R.U.T.H. Initiative, a non-profit preserving the erased legacies of marginalized veterans.
